  • Medical University of Vienna (Austria): cell and developmental biology, neuroscience
  • Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology (Germany): established the institute’s PhD programme, organised an EMBO practical course
  • University of Dundee (UK): biochemistry and cell biology

and as a guest lecturer at the

  • University of Vienna (Austria): science communication; cell and developmental biology, neuroscience
  • University of Insubria (Italy): lectures on cell and developmental biology, neuroscience
  • University of Sibiu (Romania): lectures and practical course on science communication

In recent years, his teaching efforts focus increasingly on science communication and science management.

In addition to these activities, he has held the following positions with responsibilities in teaching and the training of junior scientists:

As Director of Scientific Management at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid, Spain (since 2008) responsible for training programmes for junior researchers, including the centre’s:

  • international PhD programme, incl. the establishment and supervision of advisory committees for all PhD students at the CNIO
  • international postdoc programme
  • training programme for undergraduate students
  • training programme for post-resident medical doctors (MDs)

As Group Leader at the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna (Austria, 2005-2008) in charge of teaching:

  • three practical laboratory courses for undergraduate students on cell and developmental biology and on neuroscience
  • 18 lectures, 10 seminars, 3 tutorials and 3 journal clubs for undergraduate and graduate students on cell and developmental biology as well as on neuroscience
  • two practical courses on science communication (how to write scientific texts and give talks) and information management (how to identify relevant scientific information, assess and organise it)

As member of staff at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology (Tübingen, Germany; 1999-2003):

  • established and oversaw the institute’s PhD programme (2001-2004), incl. the organisation of annual symposia for all PhD students
  • was in charge of the joint weekly lecture series of the MPI for Developmental Biology and the Max Planck Society’s Friedrich-Miescher-Laboratory (2001-2004)
  • organised an EMBO practical course (2003), several scientific symposia at the MPI as well as a workshop and session at an international conference in Alicante, Spain (2002)

As a PhD student at the University of Dundee (Scotland, UK; 1995-1998) he taught biochemistry to dentistry students and cell biology to biochemistry undergraduate students.

Further to teaching in lectures, seminars and courses, he was actively involved in the training and mentoring of junior scientists. In total, he has directly supervised 11 undergraduate, 2 graduate students and one technician. Moreover, he has co-supervised a number of undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Dundee, the Max Planck Institute and the Medical University of Vienna as well as, in collaboration, at other institutions.

His teaching and mentoring efforts have consistently been very positively evaluated, e.g. in the anonymous evaluation surveys conducted by the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna. This positive evaluation was a prerequisite for obtaining the habilitation at the Medical University of Vienna in 2008.
